Vocabulary Development
Vocabulary is very important to the development of comprehension.
Ways to help your child develop a good vocabulary: Read to your child each day. Reading aloud exposes your child to rich vocabulary that they may not be able to read on their own. It also allows you to model how good readers sound (expression). Take the time to discuss new words, discuss the characters and the events in the story. Ask questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” After you read ask, “Do you remember what happened at the beginning of the story?” “What was your favorite part?” Turn off the TV and talk. -Show your child a picture from a magazine and ask questions like: Where would you find this? What is it made of? How do you think it’s made? 5 senses questions like what do you think it smells like? What colors do you see? How do you think that sounds? Which do you think is heavier _________ or a basketball? What shape is it?
Children will talk more when: You look at their face. Give them a few seconds of wait time before you reply. Nod and show that you are really listening. When you ask your child, “How was school?” and they say, “fine” continue with more questions until the child engages in a conversation. Then teach your child that it is polite to ask the other person, “How was your day?” and listen to the response.
Remember this: “The limits of my language means the limit of my world.” Wittgenstein
